POV DISCUSSION: One Warm Word Episode 1

SBS’s new Mon-Tue drama, One Warm Word has aired the first two episodes, and I’m officially sold. I don’t know if I should say the genre is a melo, or a mystery or comedy. I guess, it’s a mixture of all that. It’s a little unexpected that there was a considerable amount of humour. I thought when I heard the word “affair” between two married couples, it would be a definite melo. It’s nice that they added in some fun and cute as well.

Another surprise was that the drama started off with the affair already in progress, which basically means that Eun Jin (Han Hye Jin) is already having an affair with Jae Hak (Ji Jin Hee). I thought that the affair would be something down the road, but I guess not. This could either mean three things – Eun Jin and Jae Hak marrying after divorcing their spouses, or Eun Jin and Jae Hak going back to their respective spouses and lastly, Eun Jin and Jae Hak gets divorced, but don’t get together.

Are those conclusions common sense? Hah. Just sayin’. I’m rooting for Eun Jin and Jae Hak to stay with their current spouses. Reasons being, since the drama started off with the affair, it would be nice to see how they manage their feelings, and maybe repair their own marriage.

I’m not doing a full recap, but a short summary of Episode 1, screencaps included. SUMMARY.

He mentions that his father has passed away. Jae Hak offers a ride, to which Eun Jin refuses, saying that she wants to end things cleanly. From a distance, someone is snapping pictures.

Mi Kyung smiles and pats his butt, to which Min Soo backs off telling her not to do that as he’s no longer a kid. Mi Kyung laughs and says that he will always be a kid in her eyes.vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h37m43s184vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h38m16s1Min Soo hugs her close, much to Mi Kyung’s surprise, and he asks her if a kid does this. Mi Kyung mentions that people will misunderstand and he can break off marriages like this as she’s still pretty (meaning his possible girlfriends might misunderstand their relationship). He agrees with her, and tells her that he’s always there for her.

vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h38m39s232Mi Kyung goes to Jae Hak’s office to deliver food, and he treats her coldly.

vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h38m52s103Eun Jin’s younger sister, Na Eun Young works in a bank, and doesn’t smile while serving the customers. vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h39m04s232Kim Jin Soo makes a cameo appearance as a customer. She only looks happy, but is not really happy. She tells the others that Eun Jin had a confrontation in public before when her husband had an affair. It happened 5 years ago. vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h40m51s14vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h41m12s227vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h41m14s249Eun Jin was really upset at Sung Soo, not just for having the affair but for hesitating at that moment about who he choose to be with. She screams at him for having an affair just because she wasn’t paying him enough attention over the year as she had post-natal depression. He looks like he felt guilty.

vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h41m23s85vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h41m37s218A suspicious car is following Eun Jin’s and Sung Soo. Sung Soo tells Eun Jin to put on her seatbelt, but she ignores him. Eun Jin and Sung Soo started arguing in the car. Sung Soo realises the the car at the back is sticking close to him. He puts on the signal to let the car pass, but the car continues to stick behind his car. As the argument got heated, Sung Soo shouts at the driver at the back who kept sticking close. However, the car bangs into their car.

Her family comes to the hospital, trying to find out what happened. Yoo Jung couldn’t stand it anymore and tells her everyone what happened in the car and that Eun Jin asked for a divorce. Eun Young mentions that Sung Soo did have an affair, though it’s in the past. Mom started chasing sides from being on Sung Soo side, to siding with Eun Jin and asking them to divorce. Hah.

Jae Hak goes rock climbing and he remembers about the time he first met Eun Jin. vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m01s37vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m15s177vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m18s204vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m22s249Eun Jin had accused him of being a pervert, but she realised that she misunderstood him.vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m37s143vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m37s139She quickly apologises, and both of them started smiling. vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m49s5vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m58s95vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h43m53s42She meets him again, in his office.

vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h44m49s90vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h44m47s71Mi Kyung does well in her housework, and she attends to her fussy mother-in-law with care. Min Soo is living with her in the same house as well. Min Soo asked Mi Kyung why she didn’t abandoned him back then. She had every reason to, but she didn’t. Mi Kyung explains that he’s the only one who knows what she went through.

vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h45m00s207vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h45m02s220Mi Kyung goes inside her room, and opens up a drawer. Inside an envelop are the pictures of Jae Hak and Eun Jin.

Eun Jin and Sung Soo continues with their journey to the funeral. They stop at a stopover, and Eun Jin and Sung Soo started arguing again. Eun Jin tells him that the decision to divorce is her fault and that she shouldn’t have stopped him back then. He wonders why she is blaming herself so much and shouts if she had an affair.vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h45m23s172vlcsnap-2013-12-05-16h45m25s200

I like it that we’re introduced to the different characters quickly and we also get a sense of what’s to come in future. First of all, I’m so glad that Lee Sang Woo is not all broody in this drama, because clearly his character in Goddess of Marriage is so terrible.

I find the drama interesting, and I am curious about what’s to come actually. It’s not going to be as easy and straight-forward, and I wonder if Eun Jin will continue with the affair or will she slowly repair the damage in her marriage with Sung Soo. Honestly, I like Eun Jin with Sung Soo. They clearly married out of love, but somewhere along the way, he had an affair and their relationship worsen. Despite them arguing at every chance they have, I would like to think that deep inside, they still love each other.

As for Jae Hak and Mi Kyung, I wonder if they married out of love. Jae Hak treats her coldly, which makes me wonder if he has a warm side to him or if he’s treating her that way for a reason. Mi Kyung is the only character which I can’t read, because I guess she’s meant to be the mystery in this drama. She knows her husband is having an affair with Eun Jin, and she obviously joins the cooking class probably to keep an eye on Eun Jin.

Park Seo Joon 🙂 plays Mi Kyung’s half brother, Min Soo and he’s probably going to be in a loveline with Eun Jin’s sister, Eun Young. I don’t know about this, it’s what I hope for anyway. Haha. But there is one thing which bothered me…is Min Soo in love with Mi Kyung?! I know they’re siblings, but Min Soo is really weird around Mi Kyung and it could either mean he’s in a one-sided love/crush with her or he’s being very protective of her since she treats him well, even though he’s an illegitimate son.

Anyway, I love the show right now, but things can always change after a few episodes. I hope it doesn’t change though, because after watching the first episodes, I kind of have high expectations for it. I will not be doing recaps for this drama, but I may do discussion posts. It depends.

    1. no problem 🙂 glad you enjoyed it. I would prefer if you do not repost the whole article though. Hahaha. It’s better if users are re-directed here instead. I don’t mind if you repost 3-4 paragraphs (with the credits of course. Haha), but just not the whole article. Thanks 🙂

      1. Oops! Sorry, will not repost entire article in future! Actually I missed your post on the soompi page which was before my post. Did not realise you had already shared the links. Was too excited to share your “POV”s! 🙂 Look forward to your discussions for Ep3 and Ep4!!! But I see you have been quite busy with other shows too! 🙂
