POV DISCUSSION: Pleasantly Surprised Episode 9

Another brilliant episode🙂

I started this a few days ago, and finally catch up with Episode 9, and the drama continues to be awesome. It surprises me a lot that in just 9 episodes, we have everything we need. The characters are well fleshed out – we know their history, and they all have their own roles. We have childhood playmates, whose relationship slowly transcend beyond that and we also have the almost lover to complete the love triangle.

It’s been a while since I watched a TW-drama which doesn’t focuses a lot on exaggerated comedy, and the leads bickering for episodes before they fall in love. What makes this drama awesome is that, the characters feel real and so does their emotions. We get to see how Kai Qi slowly opens up to Zi Jie, and how he manages to change her bit by bit. It’s both sweet and satisfying.

Sadly it’s actually the calm before the storm, because Zi Jie is leaving Taiwan soon – and I don’t know if he will, but if he does, Kai Qi will definitely be more than upset.

I’m not going to do a recap, I’m just going to write out my thoughts.

She prefers being alone, because she find it difficult to trust others, and there isn’t much to talk about with others. When she was a child, her dad caused trouble, thus she distanced herself from people. It has become a habit. Zi Jie, who came back is taken aback that the once happy Kai Qi is no longer the same. He tries to make her feel happy again and to not push people away.

It’s both sweet and touching, but Zi Jie doesn’t know that the closer they get and the happier Kai Qi gets, she will be hurt even more when he leaves. Both of them are still unaware of their growing feelings for each other, as they both think of each other as a friend.

I’m actually happy with the way the drama executed their friendship, because we get to see step by step how both of them get closer to each other, and not just by meaningless bickering or sudden physical contact. It’s a friendship so valuable but still very vulnerable, as Kai Qi has only opened up to him.

I’m actually curious if Zi Jie will really leave Taiwan. If he does, Kai Qi would either go back to her initial lifestyle, or she could change to be friendlier but still hold a grudge against Zi Jie. I don’t know either – but either ways, she’s going to be hurt when he leaves.

As Zi Jie is always around to help her even when she rejects it, she has gotten used to his ‘nosiness’, and perhaps even without knowing, she have grown dependent on him. If he doesn’t tell her that he’s leaving any time soon, she will most probably feel betrayed and upset.

It’s as though she took so much effort to finally open up and hold his hand, but yet he is leaving her.

vlcsnap-2014-07-21-14h26m30s40vlcsnap-2014-07-21-14h26m37s113Would that mean a chance for Hao Wei to win Kai Qi’s heart?

vlcsnap-2014-07-21-14h27m01s97vlcsnap-2014-07-21-14h27m02s110vlcsnap-2014-07-21-14h27m08s164vlcsnap-2014-07-21-14h27m20s28We know that a misunderstanding caused both of them to blame each other for what happened in the past, but now that Kai Qi is aware that her dad took money from Hao Wei back then, she probably feels guilty.

I wouldn’t say Kai Qi has no feelings for Hao Wei, because clearly she’s still affected by it. Their relationship with each other is harder to describe, because both were close enough to become lovers, but they didn’t know each other well enough. Both also misunderstood the other, for betraying them. I would say…. the feeling of somehow… incomplete?

It’s like a past that you want to bury, yet you are still curious why that happened. You still want to find the answers.

For someone who wants to let go of their past, irregardless of whatever happened and whatever reason, they would just let things be and the reasons no longer matter. In this case, both Kai Qi and Hao Wei are still bothered by it and they are still curious why the other person did the thing they did.

Perhaps only when they find the answers to their heart, then they would be able to move on and leave the past behind.

As to whether Kai Qi and Hao Wei will clear things up with each other, I don’t know. They probably will – but I sense heartbreak coming our way since it’s almost time for Zi Jie to leave Taiwan.

Will he leave Taiwan, and will Kai Qi and Hao Wei get together? Or will he stay in Taiwan? Will Hao Wei and Kai Qi get together?

I’m so excited for the next episode🙂

And I’m still hoping that the drama maintains to be this awesome🙂 Oh, and a shout out to the supporting characters at the restaurant! They’re all awesome🙂

  1. I actually really like this drama as well. I could not pinpoint why, but I think you sum it up here. This is not the typical “first love” story but really a story about friendship. I have to say that I was a annoyed by Zi Jie in the beginning because I like being alone as well, and I thought the show was going the route of “a woman really cannot (and should not) be happy being by herself. However, then I started to see that Kai Qi was not just independent but was openly hostile to human interaction to an extreme. I like the idea of them really getting to friends. I also find it interesting that they did not drag out her being mad that he is really Louis.

    • Yes! Thank god, they didn’t drag out on that!!! And yup, it’s perfectly okay to want to be alone, and independent, I agree! But I guess, she uses that as an excuse to push people away, more because she fear being left alone afterwards rather than because she’s truly happy being alone.

It will be really sweet if Kai Qi actually learns to be happy alone, without pushing people away out of fear and even without Zi Jie by her side.
